Acne Treatments

There are people who are not lucky with their skin, I mean they have sensitive skin and the worst is having acne. Acne treatments are not easy at it looks and expensive too. So first check some acne treatment reviews, like the zenmed reviews, over the net before taking such treatments.

But I suggest that you better visit your dermatologist, a skin doctor, first to be more safe.  Some treatment may not be good with your type of skin, and its still best to ask advice with professionals.

Baking is recipe for longevity

Verda Walley (left) and Katherine Treiser-Brown share a laugh over a complicated cookie recipe in Walley’s Ipswich kitchen. Treiser Brown is an Amesbury resident who volunteers for Hospice of the North Shore & Greater Boston.

Ninety-five-year-old Verda Walley has been baking for over 70 years and she doesn’t intend to stop now.

But when the long-time Ipswich resident and one-time local hairdresser became unsteady on her feet, she feared her favorite pastime was coming to an end. Fortunately for Walley, now a hospice patient, her new hospice volunteer stepped in to lend a hand.

And for Katherine Treiser-Brown, a volunteer for Hospice of the North Shore & Greater Boston, her first patient assignment has turned out to be a sweet one.

the two were matched up through the non-profit organization several months ago, and since then, they’ve been creating recipes from Walley’s prized collection.

“the first week I visited Verda, we made Dark Chocolate Cake from a 1951 Ohio recipe. it was out of this world,” said Treiser-Brown, who lives in Amesbury.

Verda Walley’s recipe box is full of hundreds of handwritten delights dating back to the 1940’s. for Walley, sorting through the box with Treiser-Brown elicits a flood of memories about family outings, holidays, parties and past hairdressing clients.

many of the recipe cards are faded, making them almost indecipherable, but Walley can look at the cards and recall the ingredients and their measurements, as if by memory.

for Treiser-Brown, reviewing the recipes creates a starting point for conversation and for action.

“Verda likes to keep busy, and once we’re baking, she is in control,” she said.

each session starts by donning aprons and washing hands. then the cooking begins.

“some of the recipes we’ve made are extremely challenging,” said Treiser-Brown. “one cookie dough called for six cups of flour, six egg yolks, lard and butter.”

to date, the two have baked special Polish Kolachke cookies, yeast rolls for Thanksgiving and, most recently, Heel Plate cookies, a recipe from Walley’s childhood.

Another side to hospice

It’s clear that without Treiser-Brown’s help, Walley would not be able to enjoy the relaxation and fun that baking brings. Walley’s family agrees.

“Mom is so happy doing one of her favorite things — baking. It’s wonderful that, with help, her quality of life has been so improved, thanks to her hospice volunteer,” said daughter, Ruth.

Treiser-Brown describes her first patient volunteer experience as “inspirational.”

the Amesbury resident and mother of two young children completed her hospice volunteer training last fall. through the 16-hour training program offered by Hospice of the North Shore & Greater Boston, Treiser-Brown felt well equipped to volunteer with hospice patients.

Her time with Walley has reshaped her impression of what a hospice patient might be like.

“Verda is mobile, active and living each day to the fullest. I am definitely learning so much from my time with her. She is full of life and wonderful.”

in addition to cooking together, the two talk about current events, books and their respective families.

Verda Jane Walley was married 69 years to the late Walter “Wally” Walley of Ipswich. Raised in Ohio, she gained her knowledge and love of baking from her mother. Walley moved to Ipswich when her children were young, and she worked for many years at Mr. James’ Hair Salon until she retired in her mid-seventies.

Walley visibly brightens when she talks about Treiser-Brown’s visits.

“We have a lot of fun together. We’re like little chatter-boxes and we bake some delicious things,” she said.

And when the work of baking is done and the kitchen is cleared, Walley and Treiser-Brown sit down to coffee and their treats.

“the best part is that we get to eat what we create,” Walley said.
